X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Origins takes place before the events of X-Men the movie which debuted way back in 2000. X-men Origins: Wolverine takes us on a violent journey through the characters troubled past, showing us the audience how he grew from a small mutant young boy to a half a billion dollar military experiment known as the weapon x project. The Origins of Wolverine explores his romantic relationship with his girlfriend and his sibling rivalry with Victor Creed who later becomes Sabertooth.

Ooh Shiny.

Wolverine who is played by Hugh Jackman is obviously the main character in this movie as after all it his is origin story. I do feel as if the character Wolverine and certainly any character development took a back seat in this movie to the action. The opening montage in the movie shows Wolverine and his brother Victor fighting alongside one and other in many wars over the years, killing countless enemy soldiers and even taking a couple of hits themselves. I imagine fighting in a war would take a toll on a persons mind but fighting in many wars would have an huge effect on anyone whether their superhuman or not. We do see wolverine having nightmares about the wars but this is only shown briefly and never explored again which I believe is a missed opertunity to explore wolverines mind and show how full of rage he really is.

I wish someone would shut him up.

Wade played by Ryan Renolds is another mutant who is described as the perfect soldier only if he could keep his mouth shut by Colonel Striker, I on the other hand enjoyed the only scene that Wade Participated in and felt that the movie maybe could have benifitted from more scenes with him in not only for the comic relief that he provided but also the special effects that we saw during his action sequence was amazing.

That's a royal flush.

Which brings us on to Gambit also known as Remy LeBeau the mutant who has the ability to control Kinetic Energy, Skilled in hand to hand kombat and is pretty good at shuffling and throwing cards. however you wont be seeing this mutant on any world poker series just yet. This is Wolverine's origin so to critise this movie for not showing enough of the other characters is a little unfair so I wont do that but I will say what we did get to see of gambit looked pretty awesome excluding his spiderman wall crawl which did look a little silly but lets skip that part. I for one would like to see more of Gambit and maybe, possibly, hopefully we will get an X-men Origins: Gambit.

What About the rest of them.

The other characters in this movie such as Wolverines Girlfriend, John Wraith, Agent Zero, The Blob and Bolt dont really have enough screen time to impact on this movie and when one of the above dies we the audience don't really feel a conection with them so its not really a big deal as the film makers possible wanted it to be.

Half man half beast.

Well sort of, Victor who is Wolverines big bro is another mutant who has a strange power which is similar to wolverines in which he has sharp matrial come out of his body that enables him to slash his opponents to death, only Victors weapons of choice are sharp fingernails instead oflong spikes that Wolverine posseses, I bet victor loved his parents genes for that one. Victor who is played by Liev Schreiber is the more aggressive brother out of the two and has no problems in killing innocent people to get what he wants. So its no surprise that theres tension between Victor and Wolverine and a credit goes to both Liev and Hugh (Yes im on first name basis) for having the chemistry between them to show off this sibling rivalry in spectacular fasion.

This Movie maybe a 12a but that doesn't stop Deadpool from being Raped.

Just kidding I'm not a comic book guy, but I sure do like most comic book to movie adaptations so I have no idea of the origin of Deadpool but speaking to a couple of comic book fans they were unhappy with the treatment of the character and also some of the liberties taken by the movie makers including Wolverine not having a Japanease Girlfriend, but I for one didn't mind the eye candy Lynn Collins provided.

Superman has his Kryptonite, I have Adamantium.

Adamantium may make Wolverine indistructable but if I hear the word one more time it will bring me crashing to my knees quicker than an Adamantium bullet to the head. The fictional metal alloy may be an important part of Wolverines origin but surely we didn't need the word rammed down our throats like an Adamantium covered cookie, one sentence would have summed it up for us. Colonel Stryker could have came along to Wolverine and said something along the lines of 'Wolverine my boy, stop being a brooding bastard and check out this new stuff I smuggled from across the border, its super strong, so strong infact not even Superman I mean Cyclops could melt it with that freeky heat vision of his. Its called Adamantium' after this point we wouldn't have needed to hear the word anymore and would have stopped me from cutting the 5 cinema ushers heads off with a long blade made out of a non Adamantium material called Aliminium.

Lights, Camera and Lots of Action.

Ooh yes please, this is what the summer blockbuster is mainly about, huge explosions, highly choreographed fight scenes with a little teleportation thrown into the mix. Most of the CGI looked very good, some of which include Deadpool using is heatvision to cut through a huge concrete tower and the teleportation also looked equally impressive. Some of the CGI scenes though weren't as impressive and if you have seen the movie or plan on doing so try to rememeber the bathroom scene where Wolverines claws look quite emberassingly fake.

A big Problem.

Well not really, I couldn't think of a catchy header. Wolverine is about a mutant creature who gets abused, tricked and eventually acgrees to become a scientific experiement which results in an indistructable being been created. This superhuman has very sharp 'Adamantium' claws which he uses to shred his enemies to bits and he also decapitates one of his enemies so naturally you would think this movie should atleast have an age restriction of 18 years old. Marvel however in an attempt to sell more tickets has removed all the blood and guts and made Wolverine a Slashing mutant who is suitable for pretty much all ages (12a). Wolverine doesn't need to be as violent as Punisher: Warzone but im sure a little blood and guts would work for this movie.

To sum it all up.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine is an exciting idea but I think the idea actually is more exciting that this actual movie. Wolverine isn't a bad movie by any means but I was certainly expecting a lot more. The Character of Wolverine should have been really explored, yes this is a blockbuster so theres going to be a lot of action but a balance should have been made, having said that if your not looking for a deep plot or huge character development then your sure to welcome X-Men Origins:Wolverine with open arms. This movie also opens up the possibility of more origins stories which isn't a bad thing at all. Summer is nearly upon us and the blockbusters are nearly here so while your waiting why not check out Wolverine's Origins and let me know what you thought of it.

Mytvtalk.com awards X-Men Origins: Wolverine 3 out of 5 stars.
